Flame

As the flames kissed the skies, he watched helplessly, holding on to the tears that laboriously searched for a vent in the midst of his wrinkles.

He had turned old; no, not of age, as age was just a number, but rather, as a result of constant torture and fear that his demonic neighbors had imposed on his kingdom.

However, this was not the moment for contemplation; actions were awaited, and all the animals looked up to him as their savior.

The Lion composed himself, 'cause he realized that at this dreadful hour the burning forest and its inhabitants needed him as the King, the ultimate Defender, and the carrier of their hopes.

With an authoritative growl that had always been his trademark, the majestic Lion resolved to take vengeance on the enemies - the cruel and heartless humans who set fire on his holy abode, yet again.

Moment

Wrapped in velvet paper
That shone against her misty pearls
He gifted her moments
Of promises and joy.

She unwrapped the box
And out flew the stars
Playing with time
As silvery moon descended
On their valley of love.

Wings sprouted
And among the clouds they walked
Hand in hand
Moments re-captured
A lasting hope
Of togetherness.

Moments are to be shared
Moments are to be blessed
Savor the past, present and all
'Cause moments aren't to be chased.

Moments are smiles
And a few drops of tears
Moments teach us to live
As we learn to win over our fears.

Akash, Sapna and Dove

Dove Split End Rescue Shampoo doesn't just create magical strong braids, it also creates love. You do not believe me, right? Read on. This is the story of Akash, Sapna, Love and Dove :-)

Akash knew that today was the day when he had to spill his heart out to Sapna, confess his love, and then, if things looked good, propose her with the gold ring that he now held in his hand, admiring its soft glistening glow in front of the mirror, the letters A and S clearly marked at the top of the ring.

Yes, Akash and Sapna, together they would be, forever.

They had decided to meet at the Juhu beach at 5 in the evening. The weather was cool and bright, and perfect for a romantic date.

Akash and Sapna had been friends for five years now. They met in college, fought and then became close buddies. They shared their lunch, snacks, assignments, and now, Akash even shared his heart with her. However, he was still not sure whether she too felt the same way.

He wished himself the best of luck and quickly headed towards the beach. Sapna would be waiting for him there.

Akash reached the destination within a few minutes. Thankfully, the traffic condition was better than most days, and there wasn't any unnecessary delay on the way. He spotted Sapna sitting at a vacant spot facing the sea. Akash ran and sat beside her.

"Hi Sapna," Akash smiled.

To his utter surprise, Sapna turned towards him with red eyes, tears silently streaming down her fair cheeks.

"What happened Sapna? You don't seem to be fine," Akash asked, eager to know the reason of her sadness.

"Just leave me alone Akash. Please go away," Sapna said with muffled voice and hid her face in her palms.

Akash knew he couldn't leave her alone in this condition. He urged her to speak up, "We share everything Sapna. Can't you share this with me?"

Sapna stopped crying and looked at him. For a moment he sensed love in her eyes. He remained transfixed in its depth, until she started speaking.

"You know Akash, when I was small, Mom used to braid my hair beautifully. I had long beautiful hair, shiny and strong. I was the cynosure of all eyes in school and college only because of this reason. I won numerous awards and contests owing to my long hair, but now ..." her voice broke again.

Akash had a bottle of water with him, and he handed it over to her. However, she refused to drink, and continued speaking.

"Yesterday, some relatives visited my place. They were from my mother's family, and have always loved me. However, when they noticed my hair, they said I should go ahead and cut it. They said I have lost the charm in my lengthy curls," she started sobbing again. I waited patiently and she continued after a few minutes, "I noticed that my hair is no longer as strong and beautiful as it used to be. Split ends have appeared, and the shine has faded. I have often felt these, but have been ignoring them till now. I can't take it anymore Akash."

He sat there quietly. There wasn't anything he could do, apart from giving her company. The ring in his pocket rested noiselessly, realizing this was not the day for it to perform.

Akash held her hands softly, and tried his best to convince her, "Don't cry Sapna. Lambe lambe baalo mein aise chhoti chhoti problems hoti rehti hai (Small problems appear in long hair)."

"You won't understand Akash. Tum nahi samjhoge," was her reply, and he suddenly felt helpless.

Akash accompanied her to her home, and then walked along, not in the direction of his house, but rather to a place he never visited before.

After walking for five minutes, he reached a temple of Goddess Durga. As he walked up the steps, speedy winds started blowing from all directions, rustling against the temple bells that hung from the ceiling. The bells started ringing all at once. There was no one else in the temple, and Akash walked carelessly towards the idol.

"Aaj, khush to bahut hoge tum (Today you must be very happy). The man who never walked up your stairs before, the man who never bowed in front of you, the man who never stretched his arms to you asking for your mercy, is now left stranded in your abode owing to his love.

"Yes, I love her, and it's my duty to see her happy. But how can I see her happy when she is so depressed with her hair problem? People say you are kind. Where is that kindness God? Where?

"I have heard you own special powers. Don't you think you can use just a little bit of that power to make a girl smile? Can't you see my love happy? Why did you do this to her God? WHY? WHY? WHY?"

The wind started blowing faster, and Akash found it difficult to stay rooted at one spot. He held a pillar tightly for support, when suddenly in front of his eyes, there was a big flash of light. As the light faded, Akash found a young man standing in-front of him.

"Who are you?" the sudden appearance of the man was surprising, and Akash held on to the pillar tighter.

"Don't worry son. I am a messenger of God, and have come here to solve your problem," the mystery figure introduced himself, and then held out his hand skywards. Quite magically, a white bottle appeared in his palm.

The mystery figure handed over the bottle to Akash, and said "Take this son, and give it to her. This is Dove Split End RescueShampoo. The Dove Split End Rescue Shampoo is a part of the Dove Damage Solutions range, specially formulated to help bring split-ends together. It has fiber actives that work on the deepest level of hair, to give up to 4x lesser split-ends. Tell her to apply it to wet hair, lather and rinse. Her problem will get solved in a jiffy."

Akash was too stunned with the sudden change of events. However, he had the presence of mind to ask him an important question, "Do you think she will love me when her problem gets solved?"

The Messenger smiled, and whispered in his ears, "Follow my advice and you will not fail. Go home. Take the ring and ….."

The advice sounded great and Akash turned to thank the Messenger. However, to his utter surprise, there was no one there. The wind had stopped blowing loudly, the temple bells were no longer ringing, and devotees were silently sitting in front of the idol. "Was this all a dream?" Akash thought, and then nodded his head on seeing the Shampoo bottle still in his hand. He quickly came down the temple stairs and caught a bus that would carry him back to his home.

The next day, he gave Sapna the bottle.

After some days ...

Akash received a call on his cell-phone. It was from Sapna.

"Hi Akash," her voice was gentle and soft.

"Hi Sapna. How are you now?" It felt great hearing her voice after 4-5 days. The Messenger had advised him to leave her alone for some days and he was obediently following the plan.

"I am fine Akash. Well, actually, I ... I want to tell you ... something," Sapna said, her voice reflecting a mix of nervousness and excitement.

"Yes, yes, go on Sapna," Akash was dying to hear what she had to say.

"Akash, I, umm, I ... Thank you. You really helped me with my problem. My hair is now back to its long lost strength. There are no split ends, and it’s shiny and strong as before. And you know what, my Mom braided my hair again today after so many years" she laughed like a child.

"You are welcome Sapna. I can never see you sad, you know that," Akash smiled back.

"And Akash, well, I ... I found the ring in the shampoo bottle. Akash, umm, well ... I love you too," she giggled and his heart fluttered.

Cracks Grow Old

cracks grow old
but remain
steady
like the fissures in her eyes
enveloping dark streams

that captured dreams
once
now long for nourishment
harboring hopes
of a new beginning

cracks grow old
and wise
and through it she emerges
a phoenix
rising from the ashes
of grief and sorrow
to a world of smiles
and faithful promises

cracks may break
and yet
they shape up our lives

"If You Believe In Your Work, Then There's No Stopping You"

The recent winner of the National Debut Youth Fiction Award and also the recipient of the YCOF National Excellence award in Creative Writing apart from being the first Indian author to win the coveted ‘Best Debut (Romance)’ title at the international Goodreads choice awards, Faraaz Kazi has been tagged as the 'Nicholas Sparks of India’ by many and is rated amongst the top male romance writers in the country. A certified soft-skills trainer and a three-time post grad, Kazi is the Founder and CEO of DigiImprint Solutions, India's first exclusive promotional agency for authors and artists that recently forayed into handling corporate brands. He also consults for a few public relations firms and publishing houses. Felicitated by numerous institutes, bodies and organizations alike, Kazi is a well-known name in the social media and literary fraternity. He is fondly referred to as 'The Young Marketer' and operates a revolutionary blog with the same name and writes for major media houses.

Kazi is a fellow member of the esteemed 'Film Writers Association of India.' Truly Madly Deeply, his debut mainstream romance novel is the only Indian book to have seven category nominations in the Goodreads annual readers' choice awards and is also the only Indian book in the 'Top 100 YA Global Fiction' list. Kazi is a voracious reader and counts singing as his second love.

To read my review of "Truly, Madly, Deeply" click here.

Congratulations Faraaz for your beautiful novel – “Truly, Madly, Deeply.” I loved reading it and it was a real treat to review it. I, and the other readers, would like to know more about you and the story.

In case you find any question offensive, you can skip it. I apologize in advance for such instances.

How does it feel to have penned down this novel? Your book has been positively accepted by the readers. Did you expect such an overwhelming response?

It’s always a great feeling to see your work appreciated by the readers. As a thumb rule, I don’t think about the consequences before hand. I believe if my work was sincere in it’s approach and is good then people will automatically take a liking to it. So far, I have been right on that!

How was the entire process of writing “Truly, Madly, Deeply?”

Nothing in life that is worth all the efforts you put in, is easy at the end of the day. ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ stems from a short-story written about a decade ago for a national level competition of a major mainline paper. Once it won a prize there, I knew I had something in my hand that could be looked at in the long run.
Seven years later, post my creative writing certification, I had this urge to write something major and my attention fell on this short-story lying in a heap of papers on my desk. Expanding the plot, adding sub-plots, introducing some more characters over a period of two months and lo, I had a 85,000 word novel, ready to be served in the market!

Tell us about yourself and your family.

I come from a middle-class background with working parents, living in Mumbai. Apart from writing, which I treat as my passion and not profession, I am into social media; Digi Imprint Solutions, being my start-up venture in this field.

This book deals with the topic of ego and how it can destroy love. How do you feel ego should be handled?

At the age of the protagonists in the story, ego is ruled by emotions but is very difficult to control as that level of maturity is still to set in. It is essential to pull back extreme emotions when it comes to the negative part of a relationship. The best approach is to sit with your partner and talk it out, leave no scope for misunderstandings; even if it’s some bitter truth, it’s good if it comes from your mouth but can be ugly if it comes from a third-person.

Given a chance, would you like to change anything in this book?

Not really, whatever I do, I give it my best shot. But yes, on the distribution part, I wish the book was available to people outside India as there is a great demand for the title there, post it’s nomination in the ‘Top 100 YA fiction list.’

Who are your role models in your life?

On a deeper level, anyone who has fought the turbid battles of love is a role model for me.
On the writing front, I love JK Rowling, not just for her creation of such an imaginary world but also the struggle she underwent, both personally and professionally, to publish her first book. Khalid Hosseini and Jean Sassoon awed me by displaying the turbulent middle-eastern areas in their writings. Cecilia Ahern and Nicholas Sparks touched my heart with their romantic works and I drew a lot of inspiration from them.

How does it feel to be the author of the only Indian novel in the Top 100 YA Global Fiction List?

Again it’s a great feeling. This one came as a surprise because the paperback version of the book isn’t easily available to people living abroad. However, I think the e-book made up for its absence!

How real are the characters of Rahul and Seema?

Overall, Truly Madly Deeply is inspired from my glorious school days and talks about several people and incidents from that time. However, at the end of the day, it’s a mix of fact and fiction meant to take the reader on a nostalgic trip of their first love.

What are your other hobbies besides writing?

I am a voracious reader who also loves singing.

Are you currently working on your next novel? If so, what is it based upon?

My next project is currently lying with my agent and she’s busy securing a good deal from the publishers. It will be something of a different emotion altogether, different but more intense.
In the meanwhile, I have started work on the third. Let’s see, how soon I can complete it considering other professional commitments as well.

What would be your advice to all aspiring writers?

Get into writing only if you don’t have any monetary expectations from the craft. Do it for the passion, do it for yourself rather than following the ‘me-too’ trend. At the end of the day, if YOU believe in your work, then there’s no stopping you!

Finally, what would be your message for the readers?

If you have read ‘Truly Madly Deeply’, I would love to hear your feedback as it helps us (writers) turn even better (writers) and may be because of that, I can give you a better book to read in the future. A simple review on Flipkart, Goodreads, etc. also helps boost our morale.
Apart from that, even if you haven’t read it, I would love to hear from you- your experiences, your take on the subject. Feel free to reach me at contact@faraazkazi.com
And remember, love conquers all!

Thanks for the interview. I hope you had a pleasant time answering these.

All the very best for your current and future goals.

And You Fall In Love, Truly, Madly, Deeply

When you think of love, you recollect the love stories that have cemented their positions in your heart with their beautiful and well nurtured depiction of this four letter word. You go over the pages of such books in your mind, recollecting the events and situations in those lines that made you fall for them in the first place. Faraaz Kazi’s “Truly, Madly, Deeply” happens to be another pleasant addition to this list of timeless love stories that have found their way in our souls in printed form.

Publisher: Mahaveer Publishers
Publication Year: 2012
Binding: Paperback
Pages: 312

Yes, this book does hold the promise and passion that urges you to go ahead and clap your hands as you rise with the flow to produce a memorable standing ovation, and all credit goes to the author, Faraaz Kazi, a certified soft – skills trainer and a three time post graduate. Kazi operates his own academy in Mumbai and is the Founder and CEO of DigiImprint Solutions, India’s first exclusive promotions agency for authors and artists as well as corporate brands. He also works as a consultant for public relations firms and publishing houses. He is a well known name in the social media and in the literary fraternity. He is the recipient of the YCOF National Excellence award in Creative Writing. Interestingly, Kazi is called as the ‘Nicholas Sparks of India,’ and after reading this novel, you realize how apt the title is.

Truly, Madly, Deeply” is the story of Rahul Kapoor and Seema Tandoon, two talented and top achievers studying in the same school. While this common trait slowly starts taking the form of love, we sit back and admire the silent confessions and breathless promises that take place between them, often making us smile with the sweet innocence and unadulterated fragrance that we all associate with the beautiful aroma of first love.

However, where there is love, there are also bound to be challenges, and we navigate with Rahul and Seema as they face these hurdles. We live their lives, smiling with each success and wiping away our tears whenever fate turns cruel, but then that’s how life is supposed to be. The story is as real as it could get, and you quickly realize that Rahul and Seema exist among us, perhaps in our neighborhood, or among our circle of friends, but most often than not, they seem to breathe right within your own self.

I am not going to reveal any more of the plot, as I would want you all to savor this delicious concoction of love and heartbreak that Kazi has prepared for us. The characterization is perfect, and you grow with the characters in the story, whether it is Rahul or Seema, or their friends Sahil, Sapna, Raj and others, inviting you in their world, a request you find hard to refuse.

The story has been penned down in third person narrative, which helps you judge the characters and their traits in an unbiased form. You move effortlessly between the lives of Rahul and Seema, understanding their individual predicaments, and finding it difficult to take sides, because in love there are no right and wrong. When love is from the heart, it can never be judged.

Truly, Madly, Deeply” is surely one of the best love stories to have come out in recent times. This deserves to be read over and over again. You realize the preciousness of first love, and find yourself immersed in dreams that the words unfold.

Hats off to Faraaz Kazi for producing a memorable love story. With this book I fell in love, truly, madly, deeply !!!

Standing At The Crossroads

East
West
North
And South
Stare back at me
Standing at the Crossroads
I am lost today
Day invites dusk
As the birds chirp homewards
In silken ocean.

I count my fears
The darkened abyss
In search of a guide.

And here comes my messiah
A pack of ducks
Paddling across my dream
One, two, three
And Four
Silently quacking
Smiling, giggling
Yellow wings
Folded authoritatively
Command me to follow
I obey
And reach
My silvery nest.

Code Red

"And here, I present Code RED," Jack announced.

"Red?" responded the startled audience.

Jack held the microphone firmly, and continued, "RED stands for Rapid Energy Deployment. In simple layman terms, this solution, when sprayed on a specimen, will lead to proper channeling of its energy, thus resulting in effective and efficient utilization as per its optimum capacity; and yes, no side effects have been identified yet."

Jack knew he had hit the bull's eye. The murmurs in the room grew louder.

He had applied it on his eyes this morning. For the first time in his life, Jack saw the morning sun.

The Story Of My Story

As I typed the last few words on my laptop, I experienced a unique feeling of bliss, a sense of contentment that was hidden since long.

I admired with satisfaction the MS Word document that proudly displayed the sixty thousand words that I had keyed in over the last few hours.

This was my child, my masterpiece, something that I had always dreamt of. Soon, I would be a household inspiration; people would read me and love me and would aspire to become someone like me.

I wasn't being complacent, it's just that I knew my story really deserved to be at the top.

I heard a sudden beep, and the laptop screen blackened. Low battery, perhaps, since I had not attached the charger to the laptop.

Due to some unknown reason, the machine had completely shut down instead of hibernating. Not a big deal though.

I connected the charger, plugged on the electric supply and restarted the laptop.

And then the thought struck me like a flash of lightning.

I had not saved the document...
