Ramayana - The Game of Life (Book 2) : Shattered Dreams - Review

Shattered Dreams is the sequel to the national bestseller, Rise of the Sun Prince, in the new spiritual and motivational series Ramayana - The Game of Life. Twelve joyful years have passed in Ayodhya since the wedding of Rama and Sita at the end of Book 1.
Now, in Shattered Dreams, Shubha Vilas narrates the riveting drama of Rama’s exile. Through tales of Rama’s unwavering and enigmatic persona, the book teaches us how to handle reversals positively; through Bharata’s actions, it teaches us to handle temptation; and through Sita’s courage, to explore beyond our comfort zone. This complicated family drama provides deep insights on how human relationships work and how they fail.
With Valmiki’s Ramayana as its guiding light, Shattered Dreams deftly entwines poetic beauty from the Kamba Ramayana and Ramacharitramanas, as well as folk philosophy from the Loka Pramana tales, to demonstrate how the ancient epic holds immediate relevance to modern life. Experience the ancient saga of the Ramayana like never before.

About the Author
Shubha Vilas, a spiritual seeker and a motivational speaker, holds a degree in engineering and law with a specialization in patent law. His leadership seminars are popular with top-level management in corporate houses. He addresses their crucial needs through thought- provoking seminars on themes such as ‘Secrets of Lasting Relationships’, ‘Soul Curry to Stop Worry’ and ‘Work–Life Balance’ to name a few.
He believes that a good teacher, no matter how knowledgeable, always sees the process of learning and teaching simultaneously as an inherent aspect of personal and spiritual growth. He also helps individuals in different parts of the world apply the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and other dharmic traditions in dealing with modern- day life situations.

A mythological tale comes packed not only with a sweet fragrance of familiarity, but also that refreshing excitement of unearthing something new. Most of us are aware of the story of Ramayana, the famous epic based on the life and adventure of the divine couple – Rama and Sita. We have heard it several times, from different persons, exploring varied perspectives of the same, and forming opinions of our own, and yet, Shubha Vilas’s Ramayana – The Game Of Life series never fails to enthrall us. It’s the combination of a powerful plot and the polished story telling ability of Shubha Vilas that fetches high marks to this retelling of the Ramayana.

Shattered Dreams’, sequel to the ‘Rise Of The Sun Prince’, starts with heightened anxiety in the mind of Dasaratha, the ruler of Ayodhya. He has planned to pass on the kingdom to his eldest and glorious son, Rama. However, there is a strange fear lurking at the back of his mind. He tries to get rid of it, thinking he is worrying without any reason. However, when Queen Keikeyi informs him of her demands, which turn out to be cruel to the lives of Dasratha, Rama and the entire kingdom of Ayodhya, the fear finally takes shape and the king, bonded by his promise, could only curse himself and his fate.

The book follows a third person narrative style, and Shubha Vilas excels in it. The pace is perfect, neither too fast, nor too slow. It is as if the pages take the form of visual frames, playing in front of our eyes, a motion picture inscribed in ink. Such is the magic of ‘Shattered Dreams’ that the readers will tend to be hypnotized by the events, sailing with the flow, transfixed, mesmerized.

The characterization is again a strong point of this book, and hardly gives any reason to complain. Rama is the virtuous and righteous leader, well adept with the principles of Dharma, never straying from his path of duty. Sita, his wife, is his greatest support, always trying to ease Rama’s worries and willing to be with him at all times, both good and bad. Lakshmana, a loyal brother, aims to be an ideal servant to Rama, vowing to look after his safety and providing Rama and Sita every comfort that he could manage. Bharata is noble in his deeds, not accepting the throne because of his love and respect towards Rama.

There are portions in the book that have come out very beautifully. For instance, when Rama was leaving Ayodhya for his exile, the author brings about the grief in the hearts of the entire population through his brilliant use of words. His metaphors and similes provide the perfect depiction of the scene, stirring emotions within us, making us feel a part of the narration. The editing is very well done, and there are no unnecessary segments in the story. The chapters complement each other, leading to a seamless flow of the narrative.

For lovers of mythology and epics, ‘Shattered Dreams’ is a must read. Shubha Vilas deserves a pat on his back for doing his job exceedingly well, making his readers relive the epic, in an all new and brighter hue.

A Few Leaves Whisper

a few leaves
whisper my name
as I walk by
the shades of green

they know me
'cause here once I played
sliding down the branches
falling, and standing strong

when spring
was just another season
and not a poet's love song

Nashta With Guptaji

Who wouldn’t like to start his or her day with a healthy breakfast? As studies have shown, the first meal of the day, the breakfast, is indeed the most important one. Thus, a combination of nutrients and taste should be the ingredient to start a perfect morning.

If you are looking for that perfect nashta with lip – smacking taste and energy embedded in it, head straight over to Guptaji’s house. I came across their family, and was amazed to know that they have over a hundred different recipes for breakfast, all using Kelloggs cornflakes. Wow! Isn’t that incredible? This just sounds like the items in a menu card of a multi – star restaurant.

The best thing about Guptaji’s nashta is that there is something for everyone. There are different varieties of recipes catering to my needs and taste, and also takes the occasion in consideration. I can join with my family for Apple Cinnamon Cornflakes, brimming with a high health quotient, or go for the Homework Wala Nashta after a hard day’s work with cornflakes, cabbage and cucumber. Guptaji is an endearing personality, and has also prepared a nashta for entertainment. Cornflake Popcorn Clusters serves as a perfect nashta while watching movies with friends or family.

To start my mornings with heaps of positivity, I will choose Strawberry and Banana Cornflakes. The taste is delicious undoubtedly. However, it’s that bright colour combination of yellow (cornflakes), white (banana) and red (strawberry) that attracts me more.

And for all the chocolate lovers like me, Guptaji has something magical in store. The Walnut Cornflakes Choco Ball is a delight, and yet not sinful. It’s amazing when taste combines so seamlessly with healthy food, ‘cause then one does not need to control his or her cravings anymore. This nashta, I tell you, smells yummy and tastes heavenly. I could never have enough of it.

Anything crunchy and spicy makes my taste bud go weak. I have to resist myself to stop going for those roadside stalls regularly. However, Guptaji, the kind soul that he is, has found a perfect solution to my needs. The Chatpatti Cornflakes Chivda is that ideal snack that I would love to munch upon, anytime, everytime.

That’s not all. Guptaji surprises me with yet another item that he has on offer for nashta. He has named it Cornflake Coconut Ladoos. The yummy laddoos are a treat to watch and taste. The best thing is that I can have lots of laddoos without worrying about calories. If that’s not enticing, then what is?

Sitaphal Cornflakes is another item on the breakfast table that ensures a healthy start to the day. Cornflakes and custard apple can be an electrifying pair, and Guptaji proves that wonderfully.

Thus, I can find no reason why I shouldn’t go to Guptaji’s house for breakfast. He is warm and cordial, and with such a large variety of breakfast items to choose from, why should I even think twice?

Guptaji, here I come.

Being Happy On International Day Of Happiness

Being happy is easy. One doesn’t have to spend anything to earn a few smiles, or a few moments of laughter. Don’t they say that the best things in life are free? What can be better than the feeling of being happy and joyous?

How can we be happy then? There are no predefined rules, no definite formula that can take us through the magic doors of happiness, and perhaps that’s what makes it all the more special. In short, one doesn’t need to do much to be happy. We have the power to be happy always, and can unleash it anywhere, anytime.

Happiness comes from simple things. I am happy when I compose a new tune on my guitar. I feel joyous when I write down a satisfying piece of article. I get delighted when I travel new places, exploring and learning about different cultures. Happiness thus comes in numerous forms.

Meeting family and relatives, and spending time with them provide me with a feeling of serenity and an ambiance of comfort that in turn leads to happiness. Success on the professional front makes me feel good about myself. Thus, we can ensure to be happy in our personal and professional lives if we learn to create a proper balance between the two.

Happiness is festivals, and India being a land of numerous cultures, there is no lack of festivities in this country. People belonging to different communities have their own moments of celebrations, and when all of them join hands together to celebrate each other’s festivals, it sums to happiness all around. I love celebrating all types of festivals with my friends and family. The revelry that comes hand in hand with festivals is what makes me happy.

I am a foodie, which means I crave for sumptuous and delicious dishes. I am a big fan of Indian and Chinese cuisines, and savouring them is what gives me ultimate delight. I love dining in restaurants, sometimes trying out new items from the Menu card that those places have on offer. I also sometimes try my hand in cooking, experimenting with new recipes that I come across on different sites on net.

And then, there is love. Fall in love, and rise in happiness, exactly what happened with me. Talking with her, my fiancée, after a hard day’s work, relieves all my tiredness and stress, and makes me feel happy. Extremely happy. Perhaps that’s what real happiness is each, feeling and caring for one other, sharing our problems and moments of success, supporting through times thick and thin, and experiencing even the smallest moments of lives by magnifying them to infinite proportions.

Let’s celebrate this International Day of Happiness with our dear ones, doing things which we love to do, and having good food complimented by Coca Cola, thus turning it into the most memorable day of our lives. Happiness comes easy, we just need to welcome it in our lives, whole heartedly.

Rivalry

sometimes no reason
leads to treason
speeding up the lane
I feel am in prison

a rivalry so old
across summers and in cold
I succumb, turn meek
my enemy grow bold

I run, I hide
long tiring strides
seeking a shelter
not being taken for a ride

alas, in vain
I can't escape the rain
drenched in defeat
my tears speak of pain

why crow why
over my head you fly
dirtying my suit
you make me cry

am I your only prey
can't you fly a different way
this gooey white crushes my spirit
please leave me alone, okay

the crow, laughs and guffaws
today's war comes to a close
tomorrow will be a new day
to run away from sticky smelly dose

we now walk our separate paths
the crow flies, I make a start
to return home, and clean myself
wash my clothes, and yet another bath

The Thieves Within Us

let's be blind
and not care
let's be deaf
to what's unfair

we could stay mute
or sing lewd
giddy on a ride
we breathe crude

we fear the sun
turning our eyes away
embracing the dark
needless to say

we've no heart
we've lost our soul
the thieves within us
our light, they stole

Being Together

I woke up with a sombre mood one Saturday morning. Not Monday, but Saturday, and that’s pretty unnatural you would say. I agree to some extent. However, often circumstances invite negativity along with them, spoiling our mood irrespective of what day it is.

How does weekend matter when you know you didn’t perform well in your last examination? Add to it living all alone in a new place, away from your family. Telephonic conversations can’t be used as a substitute all the time when you need a motivating pat on your back or a caring hand on your shoulder. Moreover, on a bad day like this, they make you feel lonelier once the conversation is over.

I still remember that day. It was raining incessantly, the roads were waterlogged and I was slated to be confined to my rented room for the whole day, which made matters worse. I had planned to go out, meet a few friends and relax, but I guessed that wasn’t on the cards. I was walking towards the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea, when I heard a faint knock on the door. Perhaps it was the sound of rain, but no, it seemed more like nails scratching on a hard surface. I opened the door but could see no one. I was about to close it when luckily my eyes turned towards the floor. I use the word ‘luckily’ ‘cause what I witnessed played a vital role in making my day pleasant and memorable.

A kitten, tiny, white, and fluffy like cotton, was staring at me with its little green eyes.

I picked up the kitten and brought it inside. Perhaps she needed shelter from the rain outside, and had somehow come across my doorstep. At least, I had some company now to spend my time.

I took out the milk carton from the refrigerator and poured some on a bowl for my little guest. I placed it before it. The kitten retraced a few steps, may be out of fear. I caressed the top of its head to assure that there was nothing to worry. I was only a friend. Animals understand the language of love. The kitten stepped forward, and started licking the milk. I felt a sudden feeling of warmth and goodness within me. I sat besides my new buddy, watching it drink.

At times, the kitten would raise its head, look at me, and then again go back to its food. After it had fully satisfied itself, it walked towards me, and jumped on my lap. I never had a pet, and this was only my first close acquaintance with an animal (if you ignore the incidents of dogs barking at me and chasing me on roads). The kitten then inched towards my hands, and started licking them. I had never experienced a love of this kind before. I tickled its tummy, it ran and then returned to me.

We spent the entire evening playing. The rain finally stopped, and I heard the mew of a cat outside. The kitten jumped as soon as it heard the sound, and ran towards the door. I opened the door, and saw a white cat sitting. The kitten seemed leaped in delight, and sped towards the cat. I guessed it was probably the mother, and what better scene can there be than a mother – child union?

The two walked away, playing and jumping and running. I kept looking at them, until they were no longer in sight. I was feeling happy, and at peace. All worries of morning seemed to have evaporated. I was bathed with a dawn of optimism and positivity. After all, I spent the entire day with a new friend. Being #together is powerful, and it’s the best thing one can have. Trust me.

A Musical Dream

I wasn’t a bad student. I was pretty decent in studies, scoring fairly well in exams. I got into engineering, passed out and joined an MNC.

Life was sailing smoothly, and there was hardly anything I could complain of. However, I felt something was missing, perhaps a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that was still to be attached to form the perfect picture. I knew what was boggling my mind, and yet, I preferred to silence the voices in the head. After all, when will I have time for music?

Yes, music it was. I enjoyed my college fests, not only because of the delicious foods and games that were on offer, but also due to the musical extravaganza that was on show in those couple of days every year. Reputed bands, singers and musicians used to perform in the events, their brilliance sparkling in the starry nights, the tune leading to a perfect crescendo.

I was inspired. I wanted to learn the guitar, and decided to buy one as soon as I join a job. However, the thought evaporated out of my mind amidst the busy and hectic work schedules, and gradually, I was another IT engineer entangled in the maze of coding, tea and night shifts.

There was a musical concert in our campus to celebrate the Annual Day of my organization, and a famous band had come to play. It took the stage on fire, with every member of the audience on their feet and chanting the rhythmic hymns.

The passion reignited within me. I too had to be a part of it.

Next day, I searched the net and found out the list of institutes and teachers that offer guitar courses in my locality. I called a few, and spoke with them. Finally, I met a person who struck to me as amiable and helpful, and soon a teacher – student bond grew between us. I wanted to learn the guitar pretty soon, and he told me to be calm and have patient, since this instrument is like meditation; one has to devote his full concentration on it to learn the nuances.

The first few days were tough, with bleeding fingers often urging me to take a few days rest. I was determined, though, and didn’t want to miss a single lesson. While in office, I ompleted my tasks soon, so that I could go home and practice. Thus, my eagerness in learning the guitar also had a positive impact on my work.

A few months later I moved to another city, partly because of work but mainly due to music. I had come to know that a few of my friends from college had started a music band in Delhi. I contacted them and told about my willingness to join. They were glad as they were looking for a guitarist too. The first few sessions were spent in finding the perfect pitch for a team play. It was a learning experience as I had never played in group before. My performances in a few local functions were solo, and thus, working as a team gave me a real high.

We penned down our own songs, and started working on them, in sync. We gave a few performances, which were appreciated, and are working harder to hone our skills. Some days are joyous, while there are off days too when I am not able to perform as per expectation. However, it’s all part of the learning curve. I have dreams for the future, revolving around music. The road is tough, but I have already made a start, and I am glad I took this step.

Poor Humanity, Thus We Fail

never taught in schools
and yet, practiced by troubled minds
where innocence is bartered
with insanity

I read of teenagers
wielding guns in classes
a petty quarrel
over pencils and erasers
and secret crushes
turns the playgrounds red

when life breathes death
and conscience is on sale
destiny is shot at, and so is fate
poor humanity, thus we fail

The Sailor And She

they call her messy
nails dug in soil
of pots and leaves
brown and green

she smells of rain
and the breezes flowing from north
wherein lay messages
of the sailor
the long forgotten love
across distant lands
and tales

awaiting new letters
she unearths the old ones
from those pots
the pages wrinkled
but not his scent

"How long has it been?"
she wonders
calculating
the waning and waxing of moon
and her dreams

the laughter nearby
through open windows
makes her envious
yet, the hope trickles
down the lingering clouds
"Perhaps tomorrow
he will be back"
not knowing her wishes
are there to crack

Dry Baby, Happy Baby

Being the eldest among my cousins, I was often assigned the task to baby sit them when my uncles and aunts or other elders of the family went out. I liked it. I, actually, love playing with babies, ‘cause they have that innocence in them which rids away all your worries and anxieties. Their cuteness makes you forget all the negativities surrounding you, drenching you with new happiness and pleasures. Babies are beautiful, and when they are smiling, they make the whole family, and the entire world seem wonderful.

My little cousin who is just a couple of years old is one of the sweetest kids that I have come across. Always smiling, and willing to play, I love to take him in his lap and walk around the park in the evenings. There are a few rabbits there, and he likes chasing them, walking or crawling as speedily as he could after them. I sit on a bench and watch him. Perhaps, even the rabbits know that he is only a child, and thus, instead of galloping away from him, they linger close by, joining in the play.

However, you should see him in the kitchen (yes, you heard me right), as he is all destined to be a future Master Chef. He loves to play with the potatoes, and the carrots, holding them in his little hands, and then placing them again in the basket. Sometimes, it will seem like that he is counting, even though he hasn’t learnt numbers yet.

Another activity of his that I love is his constant giggle while watching cartoon shows on TV. Tom and Jerry seems to be his favourite (it’s mine too), and we watch it together sometimes. He mimics Jerry’s acts, while I have to play the role of the poor cat Tom. And that reminds me, often I have to obey his command and become a horse, with he riding on my back.

I love playing with him. However, sanitation and health is an important factor in ensuring the child is happy. When he is with me, I make sure he is fed his cereals whenever he is hungry. Also, I keep his bottle of milk handy. His basic toilet needs are also taken care of diapers. But they also need to be changed regularly, else the child gets wet and his mood is spoilt.

However, Pampers Baby Dry Pants is a revolutionary technique to keep the baby’s skin dry and healthy for as long as twelve hours. That’s exactly what my aunt buys for my cousin. Thus, the kid is always jolly and charming, and hardly cries. Moreover, it gives the elders the freedom to do other household tasks while the kid is busy engaged with something, not worrying about him getting wet. After all, a dry baby in turn is a happy baby.

Let's Look Up To Optimism

I was tired, angry and frustrated. And I had my reasons. No, I am not the type of guy who keeps complaining about every little thing in life, but when dreams do not get fulfilled, it does hurt, very badly.

As days and weeks passed by, the wait was proving to be an unending one. Jobs interviews were turning out to be an irritating affair, and with every passing failure, my confidence was diminishing bit by bit. When would destiny smile on me? When would I be able to hear the precious words ‘You are selected’?

I had neither a clue, nor an idea as to what to do next. I stopped talking to people, my family and my friends. I stayed locked in my room, all day, contemplating about what life has to offer. Was this my fate? When would the sun rise?

Another failed interview and I was on my way back home. It was a hot May afternoon, and I was thirsty. I stopped outside a road side stall where lime water was available for a few rupees. A little boy, who was probably in his early teens, manned the shop.

I asked for a glass of cold lime water. He obliged and I paid him. He then pointed towards his left, where a food stall stood, asking me if I wanted anything to eat. Towards his right, I also noticed an ice cream cart.

“Do you manage all these three shops all by yourself?”

“Yes Sir,” he said.

“But what about your parents? They should send you to school. They can take care of these shops.”

He was silent for a few minutes, and then replied, “Sir, my father is blind. My mother is sick and weak. I cannot let them work in such conditions. I am their only child, the light of their future. I have big dreams, for me and my parents. But we are born poor. We cannot afford medical facilities. Hospitals charge a lot. How can I get the money? The only way is to work, and that’s what I am doing. I go to morning school, and then work from afternoon to night, saving whatever little I can. I will be a doctor when I grow up, treating my parents, and every poor person in this country free of cost.”

I was taken aback by his firm resoluteness. Here I was, wondering about job interviews, sitting in my leisurely home, having all the basic needs of life, and yet stooping down with minor failures. On the other hand, this little child had a smile on his face inspite of facing such hardships and struggle at such an early age. When I was in my teens the only worry used to be regarding my mathematics home work, but this kid was handling personal turmoil each and every day.

Suddenly, out of the blue, he asked, “Are you upset about your life, Sir?”

I was numb. I nodded.

He smiled again, and said, “Don’t be. Life actually moves in a rhythm. After every low, comes a high, and vice versa. You might be experiencing a bad time now, but tomorrow will be a new day, a new dawn. Trust me Sir, life isn’t as bad as it seems. There are people who are worse affected than you and me. But we have to go on. If we don’t move through the dark, how can we come out in the light?”

His words left me amazed, a small child talking like a sage. “What’s your name, boy?” I asked.

The smile never left his face throughout our conversation, “My friends call me Chhotu. My parents have named me Swapn. They say I will fulfill their dream, someday.”

“So you will,” tears welled in my eyes. I left the place before he could see me cry. However, these were not tears of grief or sorrow, but instead they denoted a fresh enthusiasm and a mystical feeling of peace. I felt an ambiance of optimism all around me. People have struggles, but that’s what makes them strong. I decided to work harder, with renewed vigor. I sensed that good times are near, and they will approach soon.

Next month I got a job in a big multi national firm. My dreams were finally taking shape. After a month of joining, I was transferred to another city where I worked hard and grew higher up in my career.

A few years later, on one of my visits to my hometown, I was walking down the same path where I had met that boy on a sultry May afternoon. He was nowhere to be seen. His stall too was not there. I walked towards a neighboring shop and asked about the whereabouts of Swapn.

“Ah chhotu. Sir he has made us all so proud. He was offered a meritorious scholarship by the Government and has joined a medical college. Very soon he will be a doctor,” the shop owner beamed with pride.

I smiled, I laughed, and danced. Life indeed is about courage, strength, hope and optimism. Do not be scared of the dark. Instead, endure the pain, ‘cause the light isn’t too far ahead.

I looked up to the skies. The heavens rained in joy, drenching me and the world in new promises of tomorrow.

Possessed

I shout at you
and then I cry
guilt down my cheeks
the wet trail lies
like bones of paper
I crumble by
they call me evil
I now know why

voices down my throat
stay choked and locked
the goodness in me
is now being stalked

I am possessed
and vilely caressed
by demonic spells
that leave me wounded
and bleeding pale

blame me not
'cause I am ashamed
losing my control
sounds so lame
but love, this is true
I can't recall my name
letting go of senses
breaking the fences
the monster has me tamed

I scream an echo
and let out a whisper
in hollow recesses
where even light shudders
engulfed by the dark
I am its fodder
the peace now escapes
further, farther

Rain On A Morn Of March

it rained
on her window pane
a morn of March
the month, insane
when she heard him
stepping out
closing the door behind
her muffled shout

she looks out today
and it rains again
seeking and searching
in missing by-lanes
will he be back
in drizzled tales
her eyes wouldn't lie
her hope shouldn't fail
she prays to the cloud
to preserve those trails
in meandering streams
her paper boat sails
